Courting Candle

I have a random likeness for the Orvis catalogue, it all started in elementary school when I would take my dad's magazine just to see the cute Springer Spaniels.

Last night I stumbled upon this unique candle. Since you all know I love a history behind home accents, or anything for that matter--you'll know this is right up my alley.

It's called a Courting Candle and now I want one.

Orvis says they date back to the 1600s, and were used by protective parents to regulate the time a suitor spent with a young daughter. How would they do so, you ask? Well, the flame extinguishes itself when it reaches the clip on the vintage-design stand.

The candle lasts 70 hours and is made from pure beeswax. So if you have a 16-year old girl or need to limit your late night time with a boyfriend, this is the candle for you (wink wink).

(Check out other versions here.)

Very cool. I can't tell my fiance about this candle because he probably will want to get it. He's very strict about the curfew and I'm always trying to get him to stay "just 5 more minutes."

Yep. My parent's totally had one of those. Lucky for me it was for decoration only...
