You know it is good when a baker calls it her house specialty, signature item and um...you see it featured on Food Network and if that wasn't enough you need to be reminded that you'd have to take a trans-Atlantic flight to France if you even wanted something remotely similar.
That something is the Kouing Aman found at Salt Lake City's Les Madeleines.
It's a flakey pastry that is a study in opposites: sweet and salty, gooey and crunchy.
Just like Romina Rasmussen, the bakery's owner says, it is "Definitely delicious. Definitely addictive."
Here's how Les Madeleines site describes it:
"Kouing Aman is a flaky, crunchy, gooey pastry from Brittany. Loaded with butter and sea salt, the rich caramel is like nothing else. Perfect for any time of the day, but especially for a breakfast or brunch. You'll be the hit of the party if you bring these with you."
And...the best part about this is that you don't have to live in Utah to enjoy them! Though, I would argue that they are worth the trip! Each batch is made to order and will be shipped overnight within two business days to you! How amazing is that?
But seriously, this is hands down. I repeat. Hands down--the best pastry I have had in my entire life. I will be up in SLC soon to devor another one (or two..and another home).
Do yourself a favor this new year and get yourself one. You can thank me later.
Here's to my first post in 09, eh!
